Yagyu Shingan Ryu

Yagyu Shingan Ryu was transmitted from its core within the Sendai Clan to various places in Japan.
It is told that the source of its arising came about towards the latter part of the Sengoku period (the age of civil wars). The propagation of Yagyu Shingan Ryu through the Sendai clan began with Takenaga Hayato (Jikinyû)
Takenaga Hayato it is said, instructed bujutsu in (Idachi) after initially completing studies in Shindo Ryu (Ushu Tatewaki Katsuyoshi), Shinkage Ryu (Eshu), Shuza Ryu (Arakawa Jirozaemon) and Toda Ryu (Toda Seigen Nyudo).
One time, with all his courage he wholeheartedly embarked on a journey from his home to Edo (Tokyo). There he stayed living and working in the Yagyu residence. Before long Hayato’s existence became known to Yagyu Munenori. Munenori sent for Hayato and tested Hayato’s skills. As a result Yagyu Munenori was able to be sure of Takenaga Hayato’s uncommon talent. With Yagyu Munenori’s special consideration, from that day on Hayato was given permission to engage in training as a Yagyu disciple [Edo Yagyu Shinkage ryu].
Takenaga’s most cherished wish came true, and he wholeheartedly poured all he had into hard work pursuing his studies. Hayato’s progress was remarkable and it is told that in due time following a test of skill by Yagyu Munenori he was shown the highest teachings (Okugi) of the Yagyu Ryu (Edo YSkR) and ordered to adopt the name Yagyu Shingan Ryu.
The Yagyu Shinkage Ryu was the style instructed to the house of the Shogun. One after another many disciples appeared however during the lifetime of Yagyu Munenori, we can see no others of that kind who were formally given permission to use the Yagyu name. Yagyu Munenori was on good terms with Date Masamune, Lord of the Sendai Domain from where Takenaga Hayato had lived.
With this unexpected honour he could never have imagined, Hayato with great feelings of happiness “in order to rewards his teacher’s obligation”, returned to his home in the Sendai clan. Hayato was crowded with people who requested teachings and many became his disciples.


Takenaga Hayato acquired a place where he could live in peace and changed his name to ‘Jikinyu’. From then and until the end of his life he worked instructing the martial spirit to warriors of a farming village who were ordinarily engaged in agriculture.
In his later years in Idachi it is said he lived in seclusion.
